Courage to be Yourself

The Path to Authentic Leadership Begins from Within

December 18, 20231 min read

"Authenticity is the daily practice of letting go of who we think we’re supposed to be and embracing who we actually are." - Brené Brown

Empty rhetoric and hollow visions crumble in times of adversity. Yet amid turbulence, the most enduring leaders shine by matching words with deeds and living their espoused values from the heart.

Authentic leadership is built from the inside out. It stems not from ego or superficial demonstrations, but the willingness to know oneself deeply in order to act with integrity. By courageously confronting blind spots and realigning behavior to principles, authentic leaders foster the trust and commitment that transforms cultures.

In my executive coaching practice, I distill this evolution into a three-step model:

Awareness Self-discovery lays the foundation to lead others effectively. Through reflective exercises, multi-rater feedback and often difficult reckoning, leaders can comprehensively map their tendencies, motivations and growth areas. Confronting one’s whole self with radical honesty allows purpose to emerge.

Alignment The divide between being and doing starts to close as leaders consciously shape routines to honor newly revealed values. Small consistent steps create openings for embodying purpose, not perfection. Progress compounds through experimentation rooted in self-compassion.

Accountability
Staying the course necessitates self-discipline and ongoing stakeholder dialogues to catch missteps quickly. Rather than reacting with shame, authentic leaders treat setbacks as data points for adjustment. Such transparency and humility deepen team investment.

While expedient fixes may disguise symptoms, authentic leadership flows from the inside out - growing leaders along with those they serve. The outcomes inspire engagement, spur new heights of excellence and unlock potential even in trying times. For conscious leaders ready to do the work within, the ripple effects change cultures.
